The Top Five Self Care Practices That Improve Mental Wellness

This article has been authored by WHWE Newsletter Contest Winner Donya Smida, Grow&Glow

Mental well-being is the cornerstone of all personal development, akin to a car's engine – without it functioning properly, the journey can be challenging, if not impossible. Many of us mistakenly believe that logical thinking alone can navigate the complexities of life. However, I've learned through personal experience that external achievements like a successful career, a loving family, and a beautiful home don't automatically translate into happiness and fulfillment.

The essence of a truly rewarding life is deeply rooted in our mental well-being. Fortunately, the power to enhance our mental well-being lies within us. Our inner landscape offers a vast expanse to explore, brimming with opportunities to rewire our thoughts, reprogram our behaviors, and shift our perspectives. Although navigating this terrain can be challenging, it's undeniably fascinating and, most importantly, achievable. Self-care is pivotal in this journey, serving as a fundamental practice to balance and nurture both body and mind.

Loneliness Among Friends

“Overcoming loneliness and building a more connected future is an urgent mission that we can and must tackle together.” -Vivek H. Murthy, MD

Sally* came into my office with hunched over shoulders and little energy. During our first session together, she told me that her 6th grade year wasn’t going so well. Her expectations were an endless number of sleepovers, birthday parties, and hangouts. Her hopes were to find her BFF’s, to laugh and share updates at the lunch table, and to feel connected. Sadly, 6th grade wasn’t living up to those expectations.

Sally did make close friends. She did have lots of social events to attend. Where things fell short was in the connection department. The last birthday party she attended was fun. They went to a popular place with tons of games and great food. Her friends were nice. They were all having fun. Sally was even laughing and adding to the conversation. She felt like she belonged to this friend group, but she still didn’t feel connected.

Believe you can and you're halfway there.
